It’s that time of the month when pubs are closing subs or will open soon, but not quite yet. So hard to make a list during these final days of the month… still, I got a few, and some evergreen ones… again, because why not?
But first… a few thoughts.
I don’t have hobbies. I have an annoying friend… acquaintance(?)… who always asks me, like every single time we hop on Discord, “What’re you up to? Any new hobbies?”
Like… WTF? Why do I have to be made to feel like I’m somehow lacking as a human being just because I do not have a fucking hobby??? Is it so bad to spend my time reading and writing and… working… which happens to include reading and writing? For uhh… the pursuit of money and/or recognition?
That’s me, k? I’d rather read bad marketing newsletters and practice writing sales page headlines in my spare time than… I don’t know… learn how to throw pots on a wheel.
I tried it and didn’t enjoy it.
So there’s that.
Which is to say… People without hobbies, I see you. I feel you. I’m with you. We’re fine. We’re cool. All is well.
Curated Opportunities
These opportunities focus on creative and sometimes magazine writing. I try to include a mix of super high-profile and indie publications that are more beginner-friendly. (Click the names of the publications for detailed submission guidelines.)
→ Opening soon:
The Paris Review: They’ll open on Oct 1, so I figured I’d share now so you can finish putting in the last-minute touch-ups. Technically, they’re open the whole month, but in reality, they close as soon as they hit an undisclosed submission cap… so yeah, hurry! Pay: Yes, amount unknown.
→ Some last-minute subs:
Columbia Journal: No love for Columbia—the institution these days, but much love for the students. In any case, they’re open for poetry, art, and translation submissions until Oct 11. Pay: no.
Pinch: Their submission deadlines are all over the place. Fiction (until Oct 1), nonfiction (until OCt 31), and poetry (until Sep 30). Pay: no.
Ephemeras: They’re closing subs tomorrow! (Fiction, nonfiction, poetry, and art). Pay: no. [Disclaimer: extra love for them because they published my story in their last issue :)]
→ The following pubs are always open for subs:
That’s it for today.

*** Note: I cannot always vet each of these publications, unfortunately. So, please do your due diligence and research. See if their values align with yours, if there are conditions/restrictions to who can or cannot pitch/submit, whether or not they’re a paying market, how much they pay, etc., if these things matter to you.***
Have a restful weekend.
