Writing this while pondering my finances (seemingly a never-ending headache) in relation to the current living situation vs. renting a new place
I woke up to two rejections for two different pieces from two different publications.
LOL
Oh well, that’s creative writing life for you. And despite the rejections, I still want a piece of it! So, what did I do? I got up and sent my pieces to a few other pubs, LOL.
My Submittable list is now sporting a mix of dark navy (Received), royal navy/cyan (In-Progress), and gray (declined/rejected) status tags, heh.
Speaking of, is there anyone who doesn’t know what Submittable is or how it works? Should I write a short tutorial or something? Let me know!
Some housekeeping
I turned on the paid subscription feature.
You’ll continue to receive these posts/emails for free and every post will continue to remain free for two weeks after they’re published. So, you’ll have plenty of time to read them free of charge.
That said, I’d appreciate a paid subscription if you can afford it. No pressure, and I mean it! 🙂
It’s $5 per month or 50% off if you pay yearly ($30/year only.)
Opportunities
Opportunities focus on literary publications and magazine writing. (Click the links for submission guidelines.)
ADI: They’re now accepting fiction submissions through Feb 29. It’s a themed submission call: Disobedience to orthodoxies of all kinds. Pay: $200 - $500.
The Rumpus: They’re accepting essay submissions through Feb 29. They have two types of essays they accept; the regular essay and essays for their ongoing series “Enough” for women and non-binary writers. Pay: They pay albeit little, $20-$40 on average.
Chestnut Review: They’re open for prose, poetry, and art submissions all year. Pay: $120.
Copper Nickel: They’re now accepting fiction, nonfiction, and poetry submissions through Mar 1. Pay: $30 per printed page.
Hippocampus: They have a contest going on for short-short nonfiction (250 words, max). Deadline: Feb 29. Pay: One winner receives $250, and two runner-ups receive $100 each.
Joyland: They accept submissions for fiction and nonfiction prose year-round. Pay: Paid market, amount unknown.
Alien: They’re now accepting fiction submissions through Feb 29. (They accept nonfiction submissions year-round.) Pay: $20.
Variant Lit: They’re open for poetry submission until Feb 29. Pay: $10.
Passages North: They don’t pay and I don’t really like unpaid markets. Even when a magazine pays just 20 bucks, it tells me that they’re at least trying. But well, Passages North happens to be a rather prestigious magazine, so I suppose we get to turn a blind eye… As hard as it is for creative writers, I suppose it is just as hard for creative writing publishers to make money. Oh well, if only we lived in a fair world… They’re now accepting nonfiction prose submissions through Apr 15. Pay: nada.
New Delta Review: Another quality magazine that doesn’t pay. Oh well. They’re open for fiction, nonfiction, poetry, and art submissions until Mar 15. Pay: None.
Write or Die: They’re open for fiction submissions according to their newsletter. You have to use this form to submit. Pay: $200.
Ninth Letter: They open for fiction, nonfiction, and poetry submissions. Web edition theme: Caretaking. Their web edition submissions will close on Mar 31. However, their print edition submission will close on Feb 29. Pay: $25 - $100.
Forge: Send your fiction or nonfiction prose by Mar 1. Pay: $100.
Ecotone: They’re accepting fiction, nonfiction, and poetry through Mar 1. Pay: Unsure. Couldn’t find this info anywhere, but word on the grapevine is that they pay… a little.
Flash Fiction Online: Last minute but I only found out about it today, so… Anyhow, send them something by Feb 21. Naturally, it has to be flash fiction (500 - 1,000 words). They have a special submissions call for Weird Horror as well. That submission window will be open until Apr 21 or until they have 1,000 submissions.
Lolwe: Black artists only (African, Caribbean, diaspora) opportunity! Send your fiction, nonfiction, and poetry by Feb 29. Pay: Paying market, amount unknown.
Mother Jones: Maddie Oatman—senior editor of MJ—is looking to assign 2,500-word essays and profiles. Email her with your pitch to moatman@motherjones.com. Read this entire Twitter thread for the kind of stories they want. Pay: $2/word.
Sentient: They’re looking for reported stories that focus on the impact of factory farming on food, climate, politics, etc. Email your pitches to jenny@sentientmedia.org. Pay: $300 and up.

*** Note: I cannot always vet each of these publications, unfortunately. So, please do your due diligence and research. See if their values align with yours, if there are conditions/restrictions to who can or cannot pitch/submit, whether or not they’re a paying market, how much they pay, etc., if these things matter to you.***
That is all. It was a long list today, hah!
Anyhow.
I’ll appreciate it if you share my newsletter with folks you think might benefit from it :)
