Weekly Roundup: April 19, 2024
Writing this while keeping a close eye on the Palestine + Iran sitch and Columbia at home
If you haven’t heard of what’s happening at Columbia (students protesting, setting up encampments, demanding Columbia divests from companies complicit in the genocide of Palestinians), indie journalist Talia Jane is doing a really good job of keeping us up to date. It’s day-3 and the kids are still going strong despite arrests, suspensions, and dorm evictions. Also, Talia is now sharing (via @Braxtonbrew96) that the University of North Carolina has also set up encampments in solidarity with the Columbia U. students.
Looks like the kids are alright, after all :)
Opportunities
With a focus on creative and magazine writing. I try to include a mix of super high-profile and indie publications that are more beginner-friendly. (Click the names of the publications for detailed submission guidelines.)
Belleview: They’re open for fiction, nonfiction, and poetry through July 1. Pay: $75 for poems and $150 for prose.
Sewanee Review: They’re open until May 31 for fiction, nonfiction, reviews, and poetry submissions. Pay: Starts at $30.
Storm Cellar: They’re open always, for fiction, nonfiction, poetry, and art submissions. Pay: Smol payment of $10.
Rumpus: They’re open for book reviews, both prose and poetry. Pay: Smol payment; amount unknown.
SFGATE: This is for writers who know the Bay area well. SFGATE (Culture) is looking for 1,000-1,500 words features with “broad hooks that showcase the Bay Area spirit” according to culture editor Dan Gentile. He wants: “unique sex/dating features (but not diary entries), hidden SF subcultures/organizations, TV/movie features with local ties, histories of unique SF venues, historicals on very strange SF events/trends, profiles on fascinating locals” etc. Click the link above; he has examples in that thread. Email pitches to Dan’s email: dan.Gentile@sfgate.com. Pay: $200 - $400.
The Bold Italic: They’re also looking for Bay Area-based stories, according that tweet. Send pitches to info@thebolditalic.com or saul@thebolditalic.com. Pay: Similar to SFGATE.
Maudlin House: They accept fiction and poetry on a rolling basis. Also, from a recent, personal rejection, I know they respond super fast! Pay: no.
Midway Journal: They’re accepting fiction, nonfiction, poetry, and art through May 31. Pay: no.
Solstice: They’re accepting fiction, poetry, and graphic lit through May 31. Pay: no.
The Raven Review: They’re closing fiction and poetry submissions for their Summer issue on May 15. Pay: no.

*** Note: I cannot always vet each of these publications, unfortunately. So, please do your due diligence and research. See if their values align with yours, if there are conditions/restrictions to who can or cannot pitch/submit, whether or not they’re a paying market, how much they pay, etc., if these things matter to you.***
That’s all for now :) Hope you have a good weekend!
