Weekly Roundup: April 7, 2024
Writing this early in the morning while feeling weak and... a bit thirsty? And somehow not drinking water even though there's a water bottle literally 5 feet away sitting on my nightstand??? Ugh
Sorry for the delayed roundup but I’ve been… sickly these past few days.
I’m still feeling a bit out of sorts so I’ll keep my intro short and go straight to the roundup.
You may have noticed a few changes (esp. if you’ve checked the browser version of this pub/newsletter): a new logo, a different color scheme, and just a different vibe overall… although, the vibe is still kind of rocky and I’m not sure what to go with… serious? Funky? Can I have a mix?
Gahh.
Let me know if you have feedback on these changes because I’m kind of lost…
Oh, and also, have you guys seen Ramy Youssef’s SNL opening monologue last week? An unapologetic Palestine supporter on national TV, it was the best!
Opportunities
With a focus on creative and magazine writing. I try to include a mix of super high-profile and indie publications that are more beginner-friendly. (Click the names of the publications for detailed submission guidelines.)
Longreads: They’ve recently updated their submission guidelines and shared on Twitter that they’re looking for submissions. They’re open for subs year-round, but since they’ve also tweeted about it recently, I’m assuming they’re in need of stories :) So send them something! FYI, they only consider long-form nonfiction narratives. Personal essays, memoirs, reported features, etc. Oh, and also, reading lists. (More on this in the link above.) Pitch your reported stories and reading lists, but send only completed drafts for personal essays. Pay: $350 for reading lists, $500 for personal essays, and $500+ for reported features.
The Paris Review: They’re open for poetry submissions until April 30 or they reach capacity. Pay: Paying market, amount unknown.
The Georgia Review: They’re open for prose and poetry through May 15. Pay: $50 per page and $4 per line for poetry, up to a maximum of $800 in all genres.
Chestnut Review: They’re now open for poetry, fiction, nonfiction, flash, and more for their Fall issue. Pay: $120.
Haven Speculative: LAST DAY!!! Just came across this and yeah, it’s super last-minute but well, if you have something already—poetry, fiction, or nonfiction—consider sending it to them. But please read the guidelines for what they accept. Pay: $20 per poem and $0.8/word for prose.
Anodyne: They accept prose and poetry from writers worldwide who identify as part of the FLINTA* community, and on the theme of health. Submission window closes on April 30. Pay: A dividend of the sales (read more on the link above.)
Harbor Review: They’re accepting poetry submissions. Pay: $10.
West Trade Review: They’re open for fiction, nonfiction, and poetry, as well as themed submissions for all genres (ecstasy). You’ve got time; they’re open through Aug 1. Pay: no.
Porridge: They’re open for fiction, nonfiction, and poetry submissions through April 30. Pay: no.
The Molotov Cocktail: They accept flash fiction year-round. Pay: no.
3:AM: They’re open for poetry and nonfiction submissions. Pay: Unsure.
WFH: I had a hard time deciding whether or not to add this in the roundup but oh well… why not… Medium has a new publication. Not just any pub created by a Medium author but this one is from Medium itself, run by its employees. WFH stands for Work From Home, so obviously, they’re looking for personal essays and/or visual narratives (just read the linked guidelines for details) of various facets of remote work. Pay: I don’t think they pay, but you’ll likely be able to lock your story behind the paywall if you’re a Partner Program member and make some money that way. If this sounds greek to you, you can read one of my blog posts on my other, biz and marketing blog, for a [not-too-] brief introduction to all things Medium.

*** Note: I cannot always vet each of these publications, unfortunately. So, please do your due diligence and research. See if their values align with yours, if there are conditions/restrictions to who can or cannot pitch/submit, whether or not they’re a paying market, how much they pay, etc., if these things matter to you.***
That is all for now.
Wish me a speedy recovery and I hope you have a good and healthy rest of the weekend.
Wishing you a speedy recovery. Multi-vitamins in gumdrop-ish form: take two a day for a boost.
I am just recovering from being seriously ill since Feb. 27th. Give yourself extra TLC and do your "sleep homework." :-)
