I hate writing in books. But more and more, I’m considering the “art” of marginalia. This guy makes a strong case for it.
Also, I wrote a micro-micro story that will likely never bask in the lit-mag glory, so figured I’d share it here. With you.
Death of Nostalgia
By me.
The window was getting smaller by the day. The process was so insidious and imperceptible that we remained woefully ignorant. Only after it became about a quarter of what it was that Lena spotted the difference. She may be the youngest of the three of us, but she’s also the most observant. Or perhaps because she’s the youngest of us that she has time to observe. Her only chore is to brush her teeth every morning, afternoon and evening. The rest of the day she stares out of the window into the screen that resembles what ought to have been “the scenery” when those things existed. Now the world has no color. Beyond the screens exists a gray sky clouded not by clouds but poisonous dust. In this world, we—Lena, Athena, and I—reside. And the screened window gets smaller every day till we’re trapped inside without the nostalgia of the scenery. We live, we eat, we do our chores, until we die.

*** Note: I cannot always vet each of these publications, unfortunately. So, please do your due diligence and research. See if their values align with yours, if there are conditions/restrictions to who can or cannot pitch/submit, whether or not they’re a paying market, how much they pay, etc., if these things matter to you.***
See you next week.
