I’ve been thinking about language lately.
English is not my native tongue, so I use simple language in my writing.
And that makes me wonder how appropriate my writing is for the big pubs. Open a story in Granta or n+1, and you’re instantly slammed by words you have to look up in a dictionary.
But I don’t want to be that writer.
My language, 4th grade as it may be, is my signature style… I think.
I’m not sure my writing will be very “me” if I edit it to sound like every other Paris or Yale Review published author who seems allergic to anything less than five syllables.
Ugh.
Curated Opportunities
These opportunities focus on creative and sometimes magazine writing. I try to include a mix of super high-profile and indie publications that are more beginner-friendly. (Click the names of the publications for detailed submission guidelines.)
Fractured: They accept micro and flash fiction on a rolling basis. Pay: $50 for micro and $75 for flash.
Grain: They accept fiction, nonfiction, and poetry year-round. Pay: $50 per page, $250 maximum.
Storm Cellar: They accept fiction, nonfiction, poetry, and art on a rolling basis. Pay: $10.
New Delta Review: They’re accepting fiction, nonfiction, poetry, art, and hybrid work until Nov 17. Pay: no.
Midway: They accept submissions of fiction, nonfiction, and poetry on a rolling basis. Pay: no.

*** Note: I cannot always vet each of these publications, unfortunately. So, please do your due diligence and research. See if their values align with yours, if there are conditions/restrictions to who can or cannot pitch/submit, whether or not they’re a paying market, how much they pay, etc., if these things matter to you.***
Have a good Sunday.
